November/December 2011 Issue
20
Dear Parent/Guardian,
November was a very busy
month at school and the children thoroughly enjoyed meeting our
friends from Poland, Germany, Hungary, France and Finland. Our
guests were given a wonderful welcome and were very complimentary
about our children and school.
We are currently in the
middle of our Christmas Celebrations here at Coryton Primary School.
We hope that you are able to support us in making Christmas very
special for our children. The Infant children have already performed
magnificently for parents, family and friends in their Christmas
Concerts and we now have Pantomimes, the Junior Carol Service, The
Lantern Parade and Parties to look forward to.
Thank you so much for your support
at this festive time.
Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd dda!
Best Wishes,
Shaun
O’Connell Headteacher

many Christmas stalls and items for sale. Thank you for your support
of this event.

Comenius Project
On Thursday
17th November teachers from schools in France, Hungary,
Poland, Finland and Germany visited school to take part in a special
assembly and meet children in their classes. They also attended the
PTA organised Christmas Market which took place on Friday 18th
November at school. Our European friends also visited the Senedd at
Cardiff Bay and the Mayor and Mayoress at Mansion House. They also
joined the children on a trip to St Fagans. Our visitors were
extremely complimentary about our school and particularly impressed
with the children, who gave them an outstanding welcome. We now look
forward to developing this link further. Please look out for the
International display in the main entrance lobby and visit our
International Page by clicking here

Important
Pantomime Information
The Nursery and
Reception will attend The Elves and the Shoemaker on Monday 19th
December. The children in these classes will be back before the end
of the school day.
The Year 1 to
Year 6 classes will attend Robinson Crusoe at the New Theatre on
Monday 12th December. The children will be leaving school
after lunch and will return at approx 5.15pm. We will send a text
message to parents to give them a more accurate time of arrival back
at school later that afternoon if needed. When the children
arrive back at school they must go back into the classrooms with
their teachers. Parents should not encourage children to go
with them straight from the bus or whilst walking back into the
school. Once we have accounted for the children we will then
invite parents into the classrooms to collect their children from
their teachers. We expect parents to collect their children from
school after the pantomime unless we receive a letter giving
permission for children to walk home. This would only apply to older
children who usually walk home from school by themselves.
Children can
bring a small drink and snack to carry in their pockets to the Panto.
Thank you.
Healthy Snacks – New Year Resolution!!
The
school is looking to develop its status as a healthy school and from
January 3rd children will only be allowed to bring in healthy snacks
from home. This will mean that chocolate bars and crisps will not be
allowed at school. From January 3rd children should bring
in fruit for their snack and we hope that parents will support this
move to encourage our children to eat more healthily. Further
information will be sent home to parents during the last week of the
Autumn term.
Attendance and Punctuality
Thank you to parents for making a huge effort to improve their
children’s attendance. Very good attendance and punctuality has a
huge impact on pupils ability to learn well and also improves
confidence and self esteem. The School Attendance Officer will
continue to monitor attendance and will contact parents should
attendance be poor. If you are having problems getting your child to
school please contact us as will able to support you
Shoe Box Appeal
Thank you to
everybody who donated gifts for the Shoe Box Appeal. The boxes have
been collected and are on their way to children in need around the
world.
Security/Safety
Thank
you to all parents for closing school gates behind them on entering
and leaving the school grounds. I would also like to remind parents
that they are not permitted to enter the school buildings without
permission. If you need to come into the building please approach
the hatch at the main entrance or press the buzzer if there is
nobody in the office. This will ensure that we always know which
adults are in the building at all times which will ensure their
safety and the safety of the children.
Children who are late for school should also be brought into the
main entrance of the school rather than attempt to come into school
through an alternative entrance.
Please
could I ask parents not to come into the building/classrooms in the
mornings with their children as this can often be unsettling for
them. Please allow the teachers and teaching assistants to bring
them in.
Dogs
Please could I remind parents that dogs are not permitted on the
school grounds whether they are carried or on a lead. Thank you.
Ruck
Sacks/ Lunchboxes/Labels
Due to
storage difficulties we would like the children not to bring large
bags/rucksacks into school. If your child has PE or a club on a
particular day then this kit should be brought in a small kit bag
rather than a large rucksack. The school is about to purchase some
storage units but these will only be able to hold small
bags/sandwich boxes etc. Please could you encourage your children to
only bring to school what is necessary so that we can keep the
school as tidy and safe as possible.
Please
could all items of clothing that children bring to school be clearly
labelled.
INSET
Days
The
remaining confirmed INSET Days will be:
Thursday 9th February 2012
Friday
10th February 2012
Friday
20th July 2012
There are 2 additional days which will be taken during the Summer
Term. However one or both of these INSET days will not take place if
the school has to close due to snow this winter.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
To all
the children who have taken part in the brilliant Christmas concerts
this week!! We are very proud of all the children as I am sure you
are too!!
Also a huge congratulations to the School Choirs who performed
beautifully at the Tongwynlais Choral Society Christmas Concert.
They were simply outstanding!!
CLASS NEWS
Nursery
We have been
learning about snow and having fun making playdough snowmen, playing
with snow and ice and watching it melt away. We have dressed up in
warm clothes and role-played in an igloo with our very own sledge.
We are all getting very excited about Christmas!
Reception
Reception have been working hard practicing for their Christmas
Concert which was called Humph the Camel. We loved performing for
our families. We have made some Christmas wreaths to celebrate
advent and we are now looking forward to going to see the Elves and
the Shoemaker.
Year 1
We
have been learning about light and the Jewish Festival of Hannukah.
We made traditional Jewish food and really enjoyed learning about
different traditions and customs. Our Christmas Play, Children of
the World was a huge success. We learnt about the Nativity and
Christingles and are now making Christmas cards, trees, lanterns and
stained glass windows.
Year 2
We
have been learning about life in different parts of the world. We
have been finding out what it is like to live in India. We also
learnt all about the European countries our visitors came from and
have made friends with a Year 2 class in Germany. Now we are getting
ready for Christmas!
Year3
Year 3
performed a fantastic class assembly showcasing what they have
learnt about Victorians. Mrs Reid was very proud of all the
children. Christmas is now upon us and we are preparing for the
Junior Carol Concert as well as our Christmas Craft activities.
Year 4
We are
starting to get very excited about Christmas. We look forward to
opening our special advent calendar each day. We hand made it
ourselves by cutting out pieces of felt and patterned fabric and
using our sewing skills to create houses.
We
have also been having a ‘Big Think’ this month. We are learning to
have a whole class discussion about a philosophical question
generated by ourselves. Eg. Is it better to win or lose?
Year 5
We
thoroughly enjoyed our Enterprise Week, making and selling our
different products. We are pleased to say that most teams made a
healthy profit! During the last few weeks we have also been studying
various World religions and have produced powerpoint presentations,
leaflets and posters on our given religions. We then presented our
findings to the rest of the class.
Year 6
We
have been very busy with our learning this term. We enjoyed our
Enterprise Week where we had to run our own business to make a
profit. People from Barclays Bank came to work with us and gave us a
Banking workshop! We are now working really hard preparing for
Christmas.
