Here is a picture of the new eco-committee for 2008-2009.

The committee is made up of two children from each year group and they meet fortnightly to talk about fundraising ideas and how to make the school a greener place.

We recently held an animal day at school.  Children were invited to dress up as an animal and take part in a number of activities organised by the eco-committee.  Money was raised for the RSPCA.

Eco awards

Last year the committee received the bronze and silver awards for being an eco-school. We also heard that we had achieved GREEN FLAG status, the top award for eco-schools!!  So now we will be allowed to fly the Green Flag in our school grounds.  Well done to everyone for their efforts and commitment to make our school a better place to be!

Last year the eco committee organised a welliewellithon where we played all sorts of games in our wellies. We played dribble the ball, relay, hoop and throw the wellie. It was 50p to enter and we all enjoyed it.

We raised £53.10 to go towards buying an acre of land in Asia. The appeal is trying to make all the animals safe if you buy an acre of land it will be your land and the hunters can't kill them because its owned by Coryton Primary.

  • WATER WARRIORS

Water warriors will be in charge of saving water by turning off the taps and flushing the toilets.  They will be changed every Thursday in our Merit Assembly.  They all wear a badge that the eco committee made,

  • ENERGY MONITORS

Energy Monitors will be in charge of saving energy.  They will do this by turning off lights and computers when not in use.  These will also be changed in our Thursday Merit Assembly and they will wear badges as well.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

World Environment Day was on June 5th last year.

We took part in this event by making promises to SAVE the world.

We made a Promise Tree and filled it with promises such as..

1. I promise I will take a shower instead of a bath
2. I promise I will put a water saving device in my toilet
3. I promise I will turn the tap off when brushing my teeth
4. I promise to use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones
5. I promise to use a reusable bag when I shop rather than plastic carriers
6. I promise to air my washing in public, not in the tumble dryer
7. I promise I will boil only the water I need, rather than filling the kettle every time
8. I promise I will share my car journeys to work with a colleague, cycle or replace those car journeys with public transport at least once a week
9. I promise that I will pay back the environmental impact of any air travel I take
10. I promise I will organise or volunteer for an environmental project in my local community

Last year we achieved many things.

Tidying Paul's Garden

The Eco Committee had noticed that Paul's Garden was becoming messy and untidy. We decided that we should go out and tidy it. With the help of Year 6 Paul's Garden became tidy and beautiful. We hope to keep the Garden this tidy and we would appreciate it if parents could help us do so.

Sunshades

To get money for the sunshades, the Eco committee had some cake sales and a raffle that sold well. Due to the good weather the Eco committee have bought some sunshades that are placed on the school playground. We have written to Derek the weatherman to tell him about the sunshades, and he might be coming to one of our meetings.

Top Tips:

To reduce paper waste you can use both sides of the paper.

A compost heap is a great way of re-using your kitchen waste to help your garden.

Try to buy things that don't have too much packaging.

Try to re-use your plastic bags and bottles to reduce waste.

Walk when you can - it's good for you!!

Don't waste energy or water - CONSERVE them!
