Eco Committee 2009-2010

Here is a picture of the new eco-committee for 2009-2010.

The Eco Committee is made up of children from each year group and they meet regularly to talk about fundraising ideas and how to make the school a greener place.

Recently, four members of the Eco Committee were invited to an Energy Awareness Conference in County Hall.  To begin, Rob Farr gave an interesting and funny talk about energy sources, climate issues and science.  We learned that we need to be looking for alternative sources of energy to replace oil and coal that will run out in the next few decades.  We all liked the idea of using cow poo to run our cars!!

During the first workshop, Mr Farr explained how oil is formed and how it is used in loads of things we use every day.  He then showed us how to make silly putty using glue, borax and food colouring.

In the second workshop we played a game that showed us how the poorest people in the world are affected by what WE in rich countries do.

The third workshop involved discussion about food miles - how far our food travels to get to us.  We learnt that the rainforest in the Amazon is being destroyed so soya can be grown to feed the animals we eat.  We can help the environment by eating less meat and buying locally grown and seasonal foods.

We liked the idea that we can change the world but we also need grown ups to do their share too.

Eco awards

Over the past few years the committee received the bronze and silver awards for being an eco-school. We also achieved GREEN FLAG status, the top award for eco-schools!!  So now we are allowed to fly the Green Flag in our school grounds.  Well done to everyone for their efforts and commitment to make our school a better place to be!

RAISING THE ECO FLAG!

Having been awarded Green Flag Status in recognition of our environmental work at Coryton Primary School, we had a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate!

We were honoured to have Derek Brockway (the BBC Wales weather reporter) to raise the flag on behalf of our school.  Members of last year's Eco-committee arrived from High School to take part and photographers from the Echo and Capital Times also visited to capture the moment!

The whole school came outside to enjoy the celebrations and Derek congratulated the school community on their achievement.
