ECO MATTERS 2010-2011

This year’s Eco Committee is chaired by Stefan Lubienski. The other officers are Caleb Thomas (Vice-Chair), Bethan Swarbrick (Secretary/Treasurer) and Greg Thomas (I.T. Secretary). All the classes of the school are represented.

The Committee has weekly meetings and, after regaining the Green Flag last summer, has some great ideas for improving the school’s environment this year.

Ideas such as installing water fountains and purchasing special, eco friendly bark to make the tumble trail safer and more attractive to look at. They are also trying to reduce the energy used in the school.

Stefan, Greg, Caleb and Bethan went to the ECO conference with Mrs. Coates where they attended workshops about cycle power and wind turbines and also had talk from Rob Farr ( Energy MC).

Stefan and Greg represented the ECO Committee on the new Cardiff Eco Committee. They attended the first meeting at the Youth Debating Chamber at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. They made an impressive contribution and suggested ways that Cardiff could move forward in Eco matters.

Here is a picture of the new eco-committee for 2010-2011.

The Eco Committee is made up of children from each year group and they meet regularly to talk about fundraising ideas and how to make the school a greener place.

Eco awards

Over the past few years the committee received the bronze and silver awards for being an eco-school. We also achieved GREEN FLAG status, the top award for eco-schools!!  So now we are allowed to fly the Green Flag in our school grounds.  Well done to everyone for their efforts and commitment to make our school a better place to be!

RAISING THE ECO FLAG!

Having been awarded Green Flag Status in recognition of our environmental work at Coryton Primary School, we had a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate!

We were honoured to have Derek Brockway (the BBC Wales weather reporter) to raise the flag on behalf of our school.  Members of last year's Eco-committee arrived from High School to take part and photographers from the Echo and Capital Times also visited to capture the moment!

The whole school came outside to enjoy the celebrations and Derek congratulated the school community on their achievement.
